Doug Martindale
was born and raised in Spokane, Washington. His artistic abilities were
first realized at an early age when he won several National Allied
Scholastic Art Awards for several of his works while still a senior in
high school. Determined to make art his life long career, Martindale
moved to Seattle and enrolled in Cornish College of the Arts in
September 1981, where he studied under an accomplished Northwest
illustrator, John Miller. It was under Miller’s careful supervision that
he learned the importance of attention to fine detail in his work.
Martindale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from
Cornish in 1986. Upon completion of art school, he spent nearly a decade
producing and publishing limited edition prints of famous personalities,
known as his Legends Collection. His portraiture work has been
featured on "Entertainment Tonight" and has achieved national and
international acclaim. The majority of these works have since sold out.
In the early 90’s, Martindale attended a show of soft pastel
landscapes by Susan Bennerstrom, an accomplished master northwest pastel
artist. He was so inspired by her work that he took an intensive
workshop in soft chalk pastel painting from Bennerstrom and he was
hooked with the pure, intense color and richness of the medium.
Additionally, he was intrigued with the prospect of expanding his
artistic expression with the use of landscapes as his subject matter.
This proved to be a creatively unrestrictive, exciting new direction
with which he could further pursue his craft.
It is in his pastel paintings that Martindale feels he has
finally found his true "niche" in his method of artistic expression. His
idealistic interpretation of the landscapes he paints transcends the
viewer into a timeless, perfect space. One can clearly see the
incredible attention to detail in his work. The rich, bold color
variations and dramatic compositions continue to be alive, sumptuous and
compelling. Yet, Martindale’s success reaches far beyond his own self
fulfillment with his craft, for his work is admired worldwide. His
amazing body of work is appreciated by both private and public
collectors, including the Microsoft Corporation, Nordstrom Department
Stores, the Radisson Hotel chain, and Chateau Ste. Michelle wineries.
Doug Martindale divides his time between his art studios in
Seattle, Washington and Palm Springs, California.
